It's about getting the roster cut down from about 90 players to the final 53 that are going to hit the gridiron on Sundays. This would be very tough to do if there was a shorter preseason or none at all. I mean, that is a lot of people to evaluate and determine who's good enough to stay and who should be cut. The thing that I've also learned from playing sports myself is that for some reason, there are players who are stars in practice and then they disappear during the games. The same is true vice versa. As an NFL organization, you always want the best players that actually perform during the games, not guys who are just practice heroes. The foundation for a Super bowl winning team in February is set in July and August.
